The Art of Building photography contest is conducted by the British Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), now in its 11th year to celebrate creativity in the construction industry. 3500 entries from more than 100 countries were submitted in this 2020 contest, out of that jury members shortlisted 15 stunning photographs. Among those 15, the overall winner was selected.
James Retief, London based architectural photographer won the winner title for his incredible shot of Big Ben, entitled 'The Value of Time', during the tower's restoration - it's largest and most complex to date.
The public were allowed to vote for the photographs. Taking home the public choice award, and £1,500, is Borna Mirahmadian from Australia. His amazing photo shows light streaming through a stained-glass window at the 17th-century Karim Khan Citadel in Shiraz, Iran.
Other jaw-dropping images to make the shortlist include a mesmerizing shot of a snow-covered theatre in China, a dramatic picture of Europe's tallest building, the Lakhta Center in St Petersburg and a beautiful snap of floating houses on a lake in Myanmar.
CIOB chief executive and Jury, Caroline Gumble said they all experience an emotional response to a building, whether that is own home, the workplace or the buildings that describe a moment in time or even an entire society.
Furthermore, the winners of this year contest successfully explored the beauty existing in heritage buildings and their continued meaning to us all. She congratulates the winners and thanked all those who participated in the competition as well as the people who voted.
